New safety barricades arrive for Snowdown parade

New Barricades for events

Durango, CO:  The Snowdown parade will be safer than ever this year, with the addition of new 700-pound barricades that will be located at cross streets throughout the parade route.

“The barricades are designed to stop cars or trucks from entering any sort of closure area and can easily be moved and placed by one person,” said Police Commander Nick Stasi.  new barricades

The new barricades can effectively stop a vehicle going 25-30 miles per hour in just a few feet, Stasi said.

These barricades will be used at all upcoming events that require road closures. Old barricades will not be replaced by these new barricades, the new barricades were purchased to fortify the current barricade strategy with an extra level of security.

Eight barricades and a hydraulic trailer were purchased with Lodgers’ Tax funds with the approval of the city council for roughly $100,000. Additionally, the city will be asking city council to approve a second set of eight barricades using 2024 Lodgers’ Tax funds.

PARADE PARKING

The City of Durango will close the following streets and restrict parking for the Snowdown Parade on Friday, Feb. 2:

  • Fifth Street from Main Avenue to Park Elementary School will be closed starting at 1:30 p.m.
  • Traffic will not be permitted along the parade route on Main Avenue, from Fifth to 14th streets, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
  • All vehicles parked in private lots adjacent to street closures should leave before 2:30 p.m.
  • College Drive will remain open to through-traffic only (no turns onto Main Avenue will be allowed) until 5 p.m.
  • Parking will not be permitted in any private lots, including the Town Plaza Parking lot and the Albertson's parking lot.
  • Be mindful of “No Parking” signs on parking meters. No Parking signage goes up before the roads close. Vehicles inside the closure areas at the time of the parking closure will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.
  • Parking for the parade is available at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.  A free shuttle will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. between the fairgrounds and the Transit Center.
