[ARCHIVED] Fire Mitigation Prescribed Burn

Fire Mitigation Prescribed Burn Map

The Durango Parks and Recreation Department continues to work with Durango Fire Protection District (DFPD) and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to conduct slash pile burning, as weather conditions permit. Slash piles created on city owned open space in Dalla Mountain Park, Lion’s Den, Ball Lane, Horse Gulch (Powerline trail), and Overend Mountain Park (Ella Vita trail system) will be the focus of this winter’s work (see map below). Current snow conditions are within prescription to continue this fire mitigation work. Pile burning in may begin Monday, December 4th.  Subsequent press releases will notice the public as work is done at each location.

Slash piles have been created to remove debris and reduce hazardous fuel accumulation to help reduce the risk of larger wildfires. Trails, trailheads and parking areas will remain open to the public, however users should be aware that DFPD and DFPC staff and vehicles will be in the area.

Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information, please go to: https://cdphe.colorado.gov/indoor-air-quality/wood-smoke-and-health

Smoke and fire may be visible for several days after completion of this project. DFPD and DFPC along with Parks and Recreation Department staff will be monitoring this area daily. Thank you for your understanding.
