City to begin prescribed winter slash pile burns

Slash Pile Burning

Durango, CO: Winter slash pile burning may begin as soon as Dec.4, to reduce hazardous fuel accumulation and reduce the risk of larger wildfires.

The Durango Parks and Recreation Department continues to work with Durango Fire Protection District and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control to conduct slash pile burning, as weather conditions permit.

Slash piles created on city owned open space in Dalla Mountain Park, Lion’s Den, Ball Lane, Horse Gulch (Powerline trail), and Overend Mountain Park (Ella Vita trail system) will be the focus of this winter’s work. Current snow conditions are within prescription to continue this fire mitigation work.

Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information, please go to: https://cdphe.colorado.gov/indoor-air-quality/wood-smoke-and-health

Smoke and fire may be visible for several days after completion of this project. The fire district, fire prevention, and the Parks and Recreation department staff will be monitoring burn areas daily.
