Alternate-side parking coming for downtown areas in test program

Durango, CO: The City of Durango will soon begin a test parking plan to help remove snow from city streets during the winter, as well as to help with street-sweeping efforts during the summer.

The city’s Streets Division will begin the Alternate Side Parking program Dec. 4., when one side of a street will be closed every other day from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

“A version of the program was successfully tested last year, when we had significant snowfall,” said Public Works Director Allison Baker. “This schedule made it easier to clear roads, provide access for vehicles, and helped ensure good flow of melting snow and ice into the city’s storm drainage system.”

The plan will be implemented in phases to reduce impacts on parking. The first phase will cover a 7-block area near downtown, between East Second and East Third avenues (red lines in shaded area below):

The program will be in effect throughout the year, to allow for effective curb-to-curb sweeping during the summer months. “This will help protect the Animas River from excess sedimentation,” said Baker.

Implementation dates for the program:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 16: Signs installation begins to inform the public.
  • Monday, Nov. 27: Tow-away signs installed. Durango Police Department will begin issuing warning notices.
  • Monday, Dec. 4: Full compliance required and towing will be enforced.

As a reminder, parking is always prohibited in the Central Business District from 2 a.m. until 5 a.m.   Roads that are identified as Snow Routes restrict parking any time more than 2 inches of snow accumulate. These roads must be cleared for safe access in emergencies for Police and Fire and EMS services, and are part of our Safe Routes to School programs.
