Criminal offenses down for the month of September

Durango, CO: Violent or other major criminal offenses in September 2023 were down 6.3% from September 2022 in Durango, and down nearly 10% compared to the month’s four-year average.

In total there were 75 Part I criminal offenses reported in Durango in September. Part I offenses include mostly violent or other major crimes like aggravated assault, burglary, or theft. Theft is often the most common part I offense, with 56 occurring in September in Durango.

Seven out of the nine aggravated assaults reported resulted in arrest. Three of the assaults resulted in no injuries.

There was only one stolen vehicle during September, and it was recovered. Colorado has the highest rate of auto theft per capita in the U.S. Durango Police Department has launched a number of educational campaigns to create awareness of auto theft, including a wheel lock giveaway earlier in 2023 for residents who owned the most commonly stolen vehicles.

“It’s good to see that motor vehicle theft has decreased by 67%, from three offenses last September compared to just one offense in September 2023,” said Durango Police Crime Analyst Tessa Reinhart.
