[ARCHIVED] City begins design process for Camino Crossing

Camin Crossing NR Image

The City of Durango is launching the public process for the Camino Crossing project, which will design an underpass below Camino del Rio for bicyclists and pedestrians. A design charrette for city boards and commission members will be held on Monday, March 7 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the Durango Public Library. The public may view the meeting virtually at DurangoGov.org/Zoom

The design charrette will bring members of the Multimodal Advisory Board, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Durango Renewal Partnership, Creative Economy Commission, Design Review Board, Planning Commission, Business Improvement District and the Infrastructure Advisory Board together to collaborate and design their vision for the Camino Crossing. Project engineers will guide board and commission members through a collaborative design process.

The underpass below Camino del Rio will be near 12th Street and connect to the Animas River Trail. See attached image. A feasibility study in 2020 determined 12th Street to be the best location for the project.

“A crossing of Camino del Rio has been discussed by community members for over a decade and many of the city’s boards and commissions have been a part of these discussions over the years,” said Devin King, multimodal administrator. “The design charrette will bring these city boards and commissions together to collaboratively create their vision for the project.”

This will be the first step in the public process to design the Camino underpass. The conceptual design created from the design charrette will be taken to the public for their input. For project updates and opportunities to get involved, visit DurangoGov.org/CaminoCrossing or email multimodal@DurangoGov.org

Funding for this design project comes from the 2015 Half Cent Sales and Use Tax. For more information, call (970) 375-4955 or visit DurangoGov.org/Projects
