Electronics & Battery Recycling

The City of Durango encourages residents, businesses, government agencies and schools to responsibly recycle their electronic products. The City of Durango contracts with a certified electronics recycler who is E-Steward Certified as well as IS14001 Certified. It is against Colorado law to throw away electronics in your trash! Recycle them with the City of Durango, participating retail store, or other certified operation.

Electronic devices and batteries can contain significant amounts of heavy metals including lead, chromium, nickel, silver, and many other toxic materials. Recycling electronics keeps hazardous materials out of our area landfills and our groundwater!

Recycle Center Drop-Off

Up to six (6) large items will be accepted from businesses and residents on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional small items can be recycled alongside the six large items. The Durango Recycle Center is located at 710 Tech Center Dr, Durango, CO 81301.

Businesses or residents with more than six (6) large items or more than fifteen (15) items total should call (970) 375-5004 to schedule an appointment. A completed inventory with the number of each item must accompany the electronics drop-off.

Retail stores throughout or region also accept certain kinds of batteries for recycling, including cell phone batteries, automotive batteries, and rechargeable power tool batteries. Use the “What Goes Where” Wizard tool to search for options for various battery types.

State Law

The Electronic Recycling Jobs Act which went into effect on July 1, 2013 prohibits Colorado residents and businesses from discarding most electronic waste items in the trash. To learn more about the new regulations visit Colorado E-Waste or view SB 12-133 (PDF) the State Electronics Recycling Jobs Act.
